Autism Support Group
The Parents and Professional Autism Support Group will host a workshop “The Top Ten Things You Need to Know When Working with Students with Autism,” Saturday, March 1 from 2-4 p.m. at Powell County Middle School Library. The meetings are open to the public. Refreshments and childcare are available during the meeting. Call Mary Davis, PCMS Resource Director, to arrange for childcare at 663-3308. Professional development hours available for this session: 2 hours.
Football Boosters
The Powell County Football Boosters will hold a special meeting on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Airport Market. For questions call Mark at 663-0787.
Spay and Neuter Clinic
Friends of Powell County’s Pets Inc. will host another low-cost spay and neuter clinic for the community on Saturday, March 15 at the Clay City Elementary School. The cost for a female cats will be $48; male cat, $38; female dog, $58; and male dog $48. Pets over 50 pounds will cost $10 extra. Call Amy at 606-663-1631 to reserve an appointment. There are a limited amount of spaces available so you need to register early.
Little League Baseball
The final chance for Little league Baseball Signups will be Saturday, Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Stanton Park Senior Citizens’ Building. Your child must be signed up by this date to play. Boys and girls ages 5-12. Bring a copy of child’s birth certificate. Cost is $40 for first child, $20 for second child and $10 for each additional child. Call 663-8868.
Board of Adjustments
The Stanton Board of Adjustments will have a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Stanton Fire Department.
Chess Tournament
Powell County Open Chess Tournament will be Feb. 23 at Brookside Clubhouse in Stanton. Entry fee is $5 for adults; $1 for students. There will be refreshments and trophies will be awarded. Please pre-register. Space is limited. Call Bryan at 606-663-2761 for information.
Diabetes Support Group
Beginning Tuesday, March 4, Kentucky River Foothills will begin a Diabetes Wellness Support Group in Powell County. The group will meet every Tuesday, starting March 4 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the Foothills Mobile Clinic Office, 176 12th St., Clay City. Participants need to respond to Tena or April at 663-9011 by Feb. 26. Attendees will participate in self-management goal setting activities, exercise and mini-nutrition lessons. Participants will also receive incentives for attending. The group is free and open to the public, diabetics, new diagnosed diabetics, family members of diabetics, or anyone wishing to learn more about dealing with diabetes.
KADD
The KADD Organization (Kick Alcohol Drug Dependency) needs volunteers. To be a part of this group, just attend meetings that will be held at the Clay City office, 5226 Main St. (the old Clay City Times trailer) on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. If you would like the feeling of knowing you helped someone turn away from drugs and alcohol and get on the road to recovery, attend the meeting. 4-H Camp
4-H camp “Amazing Race...Around the World” will be June 30-July 3 at J.M. Feltner 4-H camp at London. Registration fee is $120. Contact Extension Office to have application form mailed to you or download them from our website.
Democrats in Action
The Powell County Democrats in Action meeting scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28, has been canceled due to the withdrawal of guest candidate speaker, Andrew Horne, from the race for United States Senate. The next regularly scheduled meeting for March will be announced.
Clark County Ed
Clark County Community Education classes will begin in March. Students must register and pay in advance for all classes. Contact Cora Heffner or Lisa Stephens at 859-745-3946 for more information or to register.
Veterans Benefits
A Veterans Benefits Field Representative with the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs will be at the Powell County Courthouse, Stanton on the first Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Veterans and their families will be given counseling in filing for Federal and State Veterans benefits. This service is provided free of any charge or fee by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Department of Veterans Affairs. Feel free to call and leave a message if we are out at 1-866-376-0308, your call will be returned. Bring all documents pertaining to filing a claim.
Biggest Loser
Women, men or youth interested in losing weight through physical activities can join the Powell County Biggest Losers Program that meets at the Powell County Public Library through April 24 every Thursday night from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The cost is $30 per person plus $1 for every pound you lose. Contact Valerie at the Extension Office to sign up, 663-6405.

The Powell County High School Class of 1968 will have their 40th year class reunion May 24, 2008. We are in the process of locating and notifying all class members. The Powell County DAV Chapter #103 has changed their meeting dates from the third Tuesday of each month to the second Thursday at 6 p.m.
