Angus Association
The American Angus AssociationSM and Angus Foundation will conduct two Cattlemen's Boot Camps this fall. More are planned for winter and spring. The Boot Camps will be hosted by the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and Pennsylvania State University, State College.

Friends of Pets
The Friends of Powell County’s Pets Inc. and the Woodstock Animal Foundation will host another spay and neuter clinic on Saturday, Sept. 15 for dogs and cats. This low-cost clinic is available to everyone. Sign up early as there is limited space. For more information call Amy at 606-663-1631.

Democratic Meeting
The Powell County Executive Committee will hold a meeting on Aug. 27 at the Powell County Courthouse at 6 p.m.

Board of Adjustments
The Stanton Board of Adjustments will have a meeting Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Stanton Fire Department.

Powell County Pageants
The 2007 Jr. and Little Miss/Mister Powell County Pageant will be Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. at Clay City Community Center for girls and boys ages 0-17. Deadline to enter is Aug. 20. Contest will be judged on beauty, photogenic and side awards. For more information call April at 663-5073.

Smoking Cessation Classes
The Powell County Health Department’s free smoking cessation classes began Aug. 1 and will run for 13 weeks at the Powell County Extension Office. Participants are encouraged to purchase nicotine replacement products along with attending the support group. For more information, contact Stacy at 663-6871 ext. 3.

Youth Soccer
There will be a youth soccer league for Powell County children ages 5-8, this fall in Stanton. Anyone interested in playing, coaching or helping, please call: Brian Derickson at 606-663-1004, or Mike Morton at 606-663-1319.

Powell County Price is Right
Coming in December: First Annual Powell County Price is Right. Proceeds to benefit Powell County Sports activities and sponsored by High Spirits Tumbling. Tickets will be $5 each and may be reserved now by calling 606-663-5025 from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets will be available for sale after Aug. 15.

KADD
Teen (non-smoking) NA meeting will be held Monday and Tuesday night at 8 p.m. at 5226 Main Street, Clay City. All other NA meetings will be Wednesday, 5 p.m., 5226 Main Street, Clay City, Friday, 8 p.m., 5226 Main Street, Clay City, and Sunday, 1:30 p.m., 5226 Main Street.

Missionary Service
The old Annie Walker Nursing Home in Mt. Sterling has been recently purchased and is in the process of being converted into the Shepherd’s Shelter Ross Rehab. This rehabilitation center will be available to any man or woman struggling with a drug or alcohol problem. Volunteers are needed to help with cleaning, painting, yard work and many other tasks. Also any donation of cleaning supplies, toiletries, food, clothing in all sizes for men and women, etc. are welcome and all are tax deductible. Contact Bro. Volunteers Needed
The Bluegrass State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is a free service to anyone 60 years of age or older and for Medicare beneficiaries. The SHIP program provides advice and assistance with regards to public benefits such as Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and other benefits. Volunteers are needed to assist Medicaid beneficiaries. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with the Bluegrass SHIP program, call local coordinator Angela Zeek at 1-800-928-4556, extension 2236.

Clay City Lions Club
The Clay City Lions Club meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at Larry Birch Amvets Post 67 on Veterans Lane in Clay City. Everyone is welcome.

Story Time
The Powell County Public Library has Story Time for children 3 to 5 years old every Thursday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the library at 725 Breckinridge Street in Stanton. All children are welcome.

 

Free Computer Classes
Free computer classes are being offered on a continuous basis at the Powell County Adult Education Learning Center on Breckinridge Street in the modular classrooms behind the public library. There will be a new schedule of classes each month. Classes offered include basic computer, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Internet Explorer, E-mail, Power Point, keyboarding and more. Archive Old Photos Class
Call the Powell County Adult Education and Literacy Center at 663-1948 or come by the center to fill out enrollment forms and sign up for a free class in archiving old photos. Learn to scan photos, make simple adjustments on the computer, print a copy, save on the computer and burn a CD. Bring your own photo to this session. Reunions

Gilkison/Gilkerson
The Gilkison/Gilkerson reunion will be Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Legion Hall (US 27/68), 30 Legion Drive, Paris from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; eat at 12:30 p.m. Bring your family and a covered dish and drink. Friends of family members are welcome to attend.

Crabtree
The Crabtree reunion will be Sunday, Aug. 26 at the home of Ladonna Crabtree, 130 Conlee Lane, Roslyn, KY, rain or shine. Bring a dish, plan to spend the afternoon. There will be music, games and fellowship. For more information call Ladonna at 606-663-1218.


Tharp/Thorpe
The Tharp/Thorpe reunion will be Sunday, Sept. 2 at 10 a.m. at Stanton Lions Club Park, Stanton. Please bring a dish to pass and drinks for your family. We look forward to everyone coming out to reminisce about the old times and to make some new memories. Please bring your family pictures.

Friend
The family reunion for Nancy Ann and Wincen Friend descendants of Powell County will be held at Abner’s Motel Shelter near Natural Bridge State Park at Slade on Sept. 1. Festivities will begin at 11 a.m. with the meal around 12:30 p.m. Bring a covered dish and drinks for your family, and any information about family or photographs you would like to share. There will be a gospel sing with our talented musicians and a horseshoe game and corn hole toss. Mullins
A family reunion for the descendants of James Mullins of Powell County will be held Saturday, Sept. 15 at Shelter #1 at Natural Bridge State Park in Slade. Festivities will start at 11 a.m. with the meal at 12:30 p.m. Come join in for good home-cooked food and an enjoyable time, play a couple games of corn hole toss.
