Lady Pirates ready to 'spike' into new season
By James Cook, Times Editor
The Powell County Lady Pirates volleyball squad is set to defend their 53rd District Title, but they will do so with a fairly young squad. Of the 20 member squad, 12 are returning players and only one of them, Rebecca McCoy, is a senior. Ten other returning players are juniors and there is one sophomore.
The Lady Pirates will also introduce eight new players, including a freshman and two eighth graders. The team will also be small, with only three players being 5’8” or taller.
The squad made the semifinals of the 14th Region Tournament last year, but lost eight players to graduation from that team. It is not exactly a rebuilding year, but a year that could be interesting.
“Any time you have to replace eight players, it’s a challenge, but this year’s group has been working hard and we feel are ready to play,” said Coach Ken Jones in a press release. “We’ve got several players who return with a lot of experience, plus some new ones who will contribute.”
The Lady Pirates schedule looks to be a busy one. They opened the season last Saturday in a Panorama at Hazard. The first regular season match will be at home tonight (Thursday) against Clark County. The schedule also includes such notables as Hazard, Montgomery County and Breathitt County. “We have added Breathitt County to the schedule this year and are working to fill two open dates to complete it,” Jones added. Powell will play in the Dink Scott Invitational in Mt. Sterling on Sept. 22 and will host the Lady Pirate Invitational on Sept. 22. The schedule also includes a newcomer to the 53rd District. Estill County has moved from the 36th District in the 10th Region to the 14th Region.
The year looks to be interesting for players and fans alike. “We hope to repeat as district champions,” said Coach Jones, “and with the right attitude, we can contend for the regional title.” The Lady Pirates finished last season, their seventh as a varsity squad, with a 14-10 record.
