Sherman Floyd, 59
Sherman Lee Floyd, 59, Glades Street, Berea, died Monday, July 23, 2007 at his home. He was born on March 10, 1948 in Estill County. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a team leader for the IBM Corporation, and a member of the First Church of God, Irvine. He was preceded in death by his father, James Thomas Floyd.
Survivors include his mother, Hazel Webb Floyd; two sons, Christopher Scott Muncie and Terry Muncie (June), both of Irvine; one brother, Larry Floyd (Susan) of Irvine; five sisters, Faye Renfro (Joe) of Mt. Sterling, Brenda Fauste (Bob) of Clay City, Linda Kelley (Billy) of Richmond, Martha Griffin (Sheril) of Beattyville, and Frances Spader (Glen) of Lexington; one grandson, Dakota James Muncie of Berea; one granddaughter, Brittany Muncie of Richmond; a step-grandson, Charlie Young of Irvine; a step-granddaughter, Megan Young of Irvine; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2007 at the Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home, Richmond, by Rev. Glennis Sizemore with burial at the Johnny Richardson Cemetery, Sand Hill.
Pallbearers were Larry Floyd, Bobby Fauste, Jeremy Moreland, Derek Kelley, Gene Rose, Stewart Rose, Steve Rose and Steve Benton.
Franklin Wells, 75
Franklin Monroe Wells, 75, of 1077 Jones Road, husband of Darlene Townsend Wells, died Monday at University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexiington. He was born July 14, 1932 in Clay City to the late Herbert and Hazel Marie Baber Wells. He was a retired construction worker and member of the Powell’s Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include his sons, Franklin “Ray” and Robert Wayne “Bobby” Wells of Clay City; daughter, Donna Patton of Clay City; brothers, Ralph Wells of Clay City and Nila David Rawlins of Lexington; sisters, Nellie Hall and Jean Allen, both of Stanton, Linda Anderson of Clay City and Delaine Highley of Florida.
Funeral services were held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Wells Clay City Chapel.
Pallbearers were Gary Reed, Dale Hall, Jerry Hall, Ronnie Hall, David Patrick and Robert Wells. Honorary pallbearers were Steve Murphey, Fred Tuttle, June Bug Davis, Forrest Meadows, Bobby Ginter, Bill Gilbert, John Snegedar and Andy Anderson.
Virginia Prewitt, 91
Virginia Stewart Prewitt, 91, died Jan. 29, 2007 of a heart attack. She was born Feb. 28, 1916 in Stanton, the oldest of six children. At age 12 she joined the Christian Church and remained active in churches the rest of her life. At 16 she won first prize in local, regional and state fairs for the complete outfit she made in the local 4-H chapter. In high school she was editor of the high school newspaper, participated in the debate team and later became editor of a local town newspaper. At 18 she taught home economics, the Old Testament and was matron of the girls dormitory and a dietician in a Christian Church academy in Appalachia. She married Charles Walker Prewitt Sr. at age 26 and worked as a chemist with du Pont during the four years of World War II, two years on the Manahttan Project. In the sixties she and her husband, Charles taught in Middle Eastern Countries for 10 years. Later she was elected first woman moderator of the Windham Association of Congregational Churches in Conneticut. In 1990 she became ill with Alzheimer’s Disease and participated in medical research programs to gain information about the disease. Her last three years were spent at her home in bed.
She is survived by her husband; three children, Charles Jr., David and Mary; and two brothers, Dr. H.H. Steward of Virginia and Dr. Ivan Stewart of Florida; three granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.
A memorial service was held in the First Church of Christ (Congregational) Mansfield Center at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3.
Herbert Goins, 64
Herbert Ivan Goins, 64, husband of Phyllis Goins, 280 Fife Lick Road, Clay City, died Sunday morning, July 29, 2007 at his residence. A native of Harlan County, he was a son of the late Charles Pascal and Ruby McClenney Goins and a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. Herb, a retired quality control engineer from I.B. M., had multiple patents accredited to his name and he was a former chairman of United Way of I.B.M. He was a member of Clay City Lions Club, and the Red River Historical Society. He was an avid fisherman and a proud grandpa.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Lewis Goins; two sons, Terry (Sheila) Goins of Jeffersonville, and Herbert A. (Kelley) Goins of Bagdad; two daughters, Michelle (Jason) Johnson and Annie (James) Campbell, both of Stanton; eight grandchildren, Jason II, Joey and Jacob Johnson, Kyle, Jared, Tanner, Kenzie and Joshua Goins; four brothers, Ken (Boot) Goins of Cumberland, Charles Wayne (Bev) Goins of Wyoming, Vernon Goins of Georgia and Michael (Sharon) Goins of Kansas; three sisters, Jan Brewer and Eleesa Goins, both of Lexington, and Brenda (Larry) McCauley of Ft. Mitchell; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m.Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007 at Hearne Funeral Home Chapel, Stanton by Rev. Mike Tatman with eulogy by Jason Johnson. Burial followed at Goins Cemetery, Clay City.
Pallbearers were Terry Goins, Tony Goins, Joshua Goins, James Campbell, Jason Johnson and Jason Johnson II. Honorary pallbearers are Ken Goins, Charles Goins, Vernon Goins, Michael Goins, Larry McCauley, Mike Ledford, Larry Meadows, Hayden Johnson and David Creech.
Maxie Evans, 70
Maxie Sue Evans, 70, widow of Tommy W. Evans, 71 Redwood Drive, Stanton, died Saturday morning, July 28, 2007. She was a native of Pike County, and a daughter of the late Rudy and Leon Hurley Belcher. She was a member of Grace Fellowship Church of God of Prophecy and a retired nurse from Hawthorne Mental Institute.
She is survived by a daughter, Georgia Ann (Michael) Shriner of Stanton; step-children, Michael Evans and Andrea Wright, both of Kent, Ohio; siblings, Bobby (Donna Sue) Belcher of Virginia and Kelp (Charles) Senters of Belcher; three grandchildren, Michael Shriner, Michelle Shriner and Jon Shriner and two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Browning and Rylee Stamper.
Memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007 by Willard Estep at Amvest Post 67 Veterans Memorial Gardens, Stanton.

Stella Brown, 83
Stella Mae Center Brown, 83, of 103 Westwood Drive, widow of John Brown and Omer F. Center Sr., died at 2:04 a.m. July 31, 2007 at her home. A native of Perry County, she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Catherine Thomas Gross. She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.
She is survived by five daughters and four sons-in-law, Dorothy and Leroy Davis of Clark County, Faye Henry of Irvine, Flora Justine and Tom Slone of Waynesburg, Linda and Gary Hoskins of Stanton, and Marcella Fran and Eugene Pace of Clark County; a son and daughter-in-law, ‘Frank and Jerrie Center of Clark County; 10 grandchildren, Robin Rose, Brent Johnson, Keith Staton, Tommy Lee Cecil, Julie Posante, Melissa Montgomery, Lisa Milie, John Reed, Tina Haddix and Erica Cline; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Scobee Funeral Home by the Rev. Ron Montgomery and the Rev. Eugene Hampton with burial at Rest Haven Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Ray Center, Rondle Center, Hank Center, John Reed, Brent Johnson, Gene Pace, Leroy Davis, Gary Hoskins, Tom Slone and Ronnie Powers. Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Carr, Chuck Quisenberry, Dr. Bennett Asher, Hospice East nurses, Verlon Edwards and Brenda Clem.

Gaylord Watson, 67
Gaylord “Pewee” Watson, 67, of 100 Wells Street, Apt. 201, Clay City, died Saturday at his home. He was born May 4, 1940 in Powell County to the late Jess and Bessie McCoy Watson. He was a retired mechanic and truck driver.
Survivors include his sons, Vernon Griffin and Stan Griffin, both of Clay City, Wayne Griffin of Colorado, and J.B. Griffin of Lexington; daughters, Linda Watkins of Clay City, Ann Bishop of Stanton and Sandy Lilly of Lawrenceburg; brothers, Jimmy Watson of Irvine, Eddie Watson of Clay City and Jesse Watson of Mt. Sterling; sisters, Jo Nell Barnes of Sadieville, Patsy Powell and Barbara Cole, both of Clay City; 24 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 30, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Wells Clay City Chapel by Rev. David Watson with burial at Woods Cemetery, Estill County.
Pallbearers were Buddy Powell, Bill Fraley, C.J. Cole, Montford Powell, B.J. Hood and Jeff Barnes.
Austin Randall Sr., 83
Austin Clay Randall Sr., 83 of Florence, died Monday, July 30, 2007. He was a maintenance worker with the Kentucky Forest Services USDA. He was a member of the Moonlight Hunting and Fishing Club and the American Legion Post Erlanger.
He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Carroll of Florence, Beverly Smith of Elsmere and Sarah Pegram of Boscobel, Wis.; a son, Austin Clay Randall Jr. of Denver, Col.; a companion, Lyda Randall of Florence; two sisters, Lou Dicle Stanhope and Bethel Crabtree, both of Stanton; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Randall and Sarah Ellen (Conway) Randall.
Funeral services were held Aug. 1, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Florence United Methodist Church with burial at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens at Taylor Mill.
