Football Sign-ups
Sign ups to play Pirate football will be Monday, July 21 at 5 p.m. at the Powell County football field. Students wishing to play will need a physical signed by a doctor (not a nurse) and permission form signed by a parent or guardian. There is no cost to play football, but players must have their own shoes. Check the Clay City Times for dates of physicals to be given by the Powell County Clinic. The clinic will not be holding any free physicals. On sign-up day wear comfortable clothing (shorts and T shirts) and be prepared for your first practice of the season. Concealed Weapons Class
There will be a Concealed Weapons Class on Saturday, July 19, at 9 a.m. at the Stanton Fire Department. Pre-registration is preferred, but not required. The cost is $50 per person. Call Eddie Barnes at 859-771-5872 for more information.
Fall Ball Sign Ups
Fall ball sign ups for ages 9-10 will be Friday, July 18 from 5-7 p.m., and Saturday, July 19 at 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Stanton City Park. There will be a $30 entry fee. Call Shane Trent at 606-481-1043.
Planning/Zoning
The Stanton Planning and Zoning commission will have a meeting on Thursday, July 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Stanton Fire Department.
Fair Pageant
Breathitt County Fair Beauty Pageant July 26. Must be registered by July 20, fee is $35. Kentucky State Fair Beauty Pageant System, birth—7 years for boys and birth—21 years for girls. To register and for any questions call Martha Boggs at 1-606-272-2844.
Golf Tournament
The 2008 Michael Burton Memorial Golf Tournament will be July 31 at 10 a.m. (shotgun start); scramble at Beechfork Golf Club. Cost is $50 per person; $200 per 4-Man Team (includes a steak dinner). Prizes: 1st place team, $400; 2nd place team $200; 3rd place team $100; closest to pin; door prizes. Proceeds to benefit the Powell County Shop With a Cop. Kids Free Lunch
Free lunch will be served for kids 18 and under at the Clay City Fire Department, 12th Street, Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. till noon. This program runs through Aug. 1 and is sponsored by Foothills Community Action Partnership Youth Investment Project. Call 663-2659 for more information.
Donations Needed
Donations are needed for the McKinney/Highley/Potts Cemetery. Only a few families are donating to maintain the cemetery. All families must donate to continue to maintain the entire cemetery. Send donations to: Mary Lou Potts, 5709 Hardwicks Road, Clay City, KY 40312.
Powell County Library
“Catch the Reading Bug” program will be at the Powell County Public Library and the Community Building in Clay City for the 2008 Summer Reading Program on Wednesday, July 23 at the library at 9:30-11 a.m. Community Building in Clay City Wednesday 23 from 1-2:30 p.m. The program is for children going into the first grade through 5th. Children can register for the program starting in the middle of May or at the end of the school year. We will be giving away prizes all through the program. PCHS Class of 1998
The Powell County High School Class of 1998 is planning a 10-year reunion on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 5 p.m. at Hall’s on the River in Winchester. The cost for dinner will be $23.95 per person. Veterans Benefits
A Veterans Benefits Field Representative with the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs will be at the Powell County Courthouse, Stanton on the first Thursday of each month from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Veterans and their families will be given counseling in filing for Federal and State Veterans benefits. This service is provided free of any charge or fee by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, Department of Veterans Affairs. DAV Meeting
The Powell County DAV Chapter #103 has changed their meeting dates from the third Tuesday of each month to the second Thursday at 6 p.m
Family Reunions
Willoughby
The descendants of Benjamin Jefferson Willoughby and Amanda Honn Willoughby will have a family reunion at Lion’s Club Park July 27 beginning at 11 a.m. Bring a dish and enjoy photos, games and good food.
Bellamy

The descendants, family and friends of Hershel and Junie Brewer Hall are invited to a reunion on Saturday, Aug. 2 at “Pops Old Blacksmith Shop” under the cliff at Pilot, South Fork Road in Stanton. McKinney
The annual McKinney family reunion will take place on Saturday, July 26 from mid-morning until late afternoon, at Jackson’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Spout Springs on Hwy. 82 between Hargett and Clay City. A potluck dinner on the ground will begin at 12:30 p.m. All descendants of Wilde McKinney and Elizabeth Jane Matthews McKinney are invited to bring a dish and participate to get to know family members from other branches of the family tree and to help fill in gaps in the genealogy data base.
Bennett
The Bennett reunion will be Saturday, July 26 at 11 a.m. at Natural Bridge State Park Shelter #1 (take the road to Hoedown Island, at the bottom of the hill, turn left, go straight back).
